I have seen plenty of suggestions and links for a striker as a transfer target but not for a RWB. Yet this is a strong priority as we do not have great long term cover for that position.
Who do think is out there we should go for?

Another position I think we should look abroad for.
As I wrote that, I could see the irony.
We have Doherty at the moment, almost home grown (I did say almost), and on the left we have Douglas who's not only a Scot, but is a guy we repatriated.

However that's where the oddity ends. Wing backs are a bit in short supply since in the UK this is a relatively recent style that only now has been adopted following the success of those Johnny Foreigners in the premier, the like of Chelsea and Conte, and to some extent Leicester at their best 2 seasons ago.
I don't know about man city since they are so jam packed with talent they could play any formation with success.

So where can we find a right wing back who not only backs up Doherty but potentially steps up and usurps him.

I can't think of anyone at championship level.

Will await with interest. In the meantime I'm hoping for Valencia ;)

This is the name I had in mind. I don't think Boro would release him to us though.

Only signed for boro in the summer, potentially a summer target?

    Looks ideal upgrade/competition for Doherty

Ryan Fredericks from Fulham would be my pick. Caused us problems last season and this season. Very quick although not the most convincing defender. Good going forward and would provide plenty of assists though.

Whoever comes in will be competing with a very consistent performer in Doherty. The club either have to spend a lot of money/wages on a high profile player that is better than Doc and will become first choice, or choose the cheaper option of someone to compete to be first choice.

I think the club might choose the cheaper option for the RWB position.

There are quite a few domestic players that can play RWB, who are out of contract in the summer (according to Transfermrkt) and therefore may be available at reduced prices in January, similar to the Ben Marshall situation last season.....
    • Moses Odubajo - Hull
    • Joel Ward - Palace
    • Jeremy Pied - Southampton
    • Andy Yiadom - Barnsley
    • Ryan Fredericks - Fulham
    • Liam Rosenior - Brighton
Of these names I'd like Fredericks - he is rapid and looked good when we played Fulham.

There are also a few high-profile, older players who can play RWB out of contract in the summer.....
    • Juanfran - Athletico Madrid
    • Stephan Lichsteiner - Juventus
    • Rafinha - Bayern Munich
    I'd take any of these!!

Being honest I have no idea and many of Nuno's signings have come out of the blue so really wouldn't be surprised to find players signed that are unexpected or not well known over here.

Its total pie in the sky but I don't suppose Ricardo Pereira is available ;)
Maybe if we go up this season with mendes help.

Portugal isn't a bad place to go and find the next one, based on Cedric at Southampton. Relative unknown but gone on to become an excellent player.

We need the equivalent of Vinagre if such a player exists. Failing that I would get Iorfa and Graham back from their loans and have them along with Marshall as cover for Doherty providing Big Phil is half way to the glue factory.

Why? Well, because I would wait until the summer and offer Porto £100mill for Telles, Felipe, Pereira and Danilo thus turning us into Top 4 material in one raid whilst strengthening the very positions we lack depth and competition.

That would leave us requiring a new Goalie, a striker and perhaps a versatile forward. Step forward Rafa Silva and our favourite future player who’s loan expires this summer.....Anderson Talisca :)

I think we should sign a Portuguese player none of us have ever heard of on loan with a view to permanent from Porto/Benfica/Valencia/Atletico or Monaco. I predict this player will absolutely tear up the championship and have us all in even more uncertainty about who is best out of New player/Neves/Boly/Jota/Costa/Nuno/Coady.

I played against him when I was kid (like 14 or 15) in the schoolyard. He was way shorter than me (2 years younger than me) and tried to do a sombrero on me, I gave him a rugby tackle to avoid humiliation, the kid was amazing. Every time he does something good, it makes feel better about that day.

We need to forget the likes of Cyrus Christie and go for someone far better. The LWB/RWB positions are so key to what we do that we need to get the best players we possibly can for them.

As well as he's played this season I don't think that Doherty is good enough for the PL. Back-up maybe, could be wrong though

    Christie?

He's ahead of Doherty in Ireland pecking order and whenever I've seen him as offered a lot going forward as well as defensively - so guess depends if you rate Doherty or not

Cyrus Christie is shocking. His positioning is woeful, he is deceivingly slow, his final ball doesn’t exist and he cannot defend.

How he plays for Ireland ahead of Doherty I’ll never know.

He is a massive liability and this is someone who watches Ireland regularly.

He is not premiership quality and certainly not a player I’d like to see in old golds

I dare anyone to watch replays of the WC qualifying campaign.

Worse player on the pitch and I’m talking both sides more often than not.

We have better and whomever we bring in needs to be even better than that.

If it's just cover we're after, do we have recall options on Iorfa or Graham?

If not, another option could be Leo Da Silva Lopes. 19 year old Portuguese wing-back at Peterborough. Was very impressive against us in the pre-season game and very quick (kept up with Vinagre).

I've always been impressed with James Tavernier up at Rangers and Jack Hunt at Sheffield Weds.

As for a couple of players who haven't been getting regular football in the Premier League, DeAndre Yedlin was very good against us last year, Sam Byram is just back from injury at West Ham.

Given the Doc's form, however, I wouldn't be spending big at the moment. Just make sure we have sufficient cover to get us through to the Summer and revisit the situation then.

Why don’t we just wait till the summer and sign Dani Alves?

I wouldn’t give him the captains arm band though. I think Ronaldo will get it.

Fredericks like others say would be decent, if Fulham would be open to selling him. The other option I'd like is Kyle Walker-Peters on loan from Spurs with a view to buying if possible. That kid for me is going right to the top.

Christie for me has a better end product than Doc, but i think Docs all round game is better. I think we will need an upgrade in that position anyway next season in the premier league.
