Depends on the manager. England have a lot of interesting young midfielders coming up (including our own MGW) and with them playing Sterling and others will become much more of a threat.
I think England in the next 3 or 4 tournaments is going to be very nice to watch, assuming the manager has a plan that isn't just defend and hope the set-pieces go in.

I expect the same response from you when Wolves don't win the Premier League this season. I want pure anger and rage, like you're doing now. Hell, I want the same rage if we don't win the EFL cup this year. It's only fair. 1st place or rage, amirite?

3rd place shouldn't be celebrated for a country like England? You haven't even made the semi-finals in nearly 30 years. Losing a game is always a failure, but finishing 4th in the World Cup is not a failure.

i have to question our tactics we couldn’t stop the ball going in the box, we dropped 10 yards and played long ball to kane for him to nod onto rashford and 3 centre halves. We didn’t react to their tactical shuffle at the break. But it’s been a great tournament, don’t get this bull that it fell into our laps to get to semi finals. You still have to do well to get there

Fair 1st half by England but poor 2nd half. We did improve slightly when England's answer to Karl Henry, Henderson was subbed but overall Croatia were deserved winners. At least we've been spared being humiliated by France in the final.

we are told Kane is our only world-class player. Maybe so, but his two misses cost us a place in the final.
The supposedly inferior Mandzukic put away the winner in clinical fashion.

Yes he did. I agree with Gary Neville's comment that he wouldn't be surprised if Kane wasn't 100%. He wasn't his usual self against Sweden and he was worse tonight.

Best thing for england is tottenham sell kane to bayern or dortmund or some other big club.He gets to play fewer games -needs to conserve his energy as he gets very leggy.

Ditto alli, lingard ,rashford and sterling. All need to be stronger mentally and understand about game management .

But plenty to work on and 2020 is effectively a home tournament.Unfortunately Italy, holland and germany are unlikely to be as poor again.

Did better that most people thought with that squad of players the way the route to final opened up is a once in a lifetime thing yet they still didn't quite have enough to get past a pretty ordinary Croatia team stand out players for me were Maguire and Trippier by far the worst were Sterling, Dier and Young

You must lead a very sheltered life if you read that post and thought I was raging.

Surely you realise the difference between a World Cup where it's winner takes all every 4 years and a league of 38 games every year where you can build year on year with plenty of European places up for grabs? It's irrelevant that England hasn't been in a semi final for 28 years, we are a major nation in football and should be going there to win it. It will be 20 years since Brazil won it at the next world cup, do you think they'll say a semi final is a great achievement? No, because it's win or bust for the major nations, tinpot footballing nations such as Canada would achieve a minor miracle just by qualifying so that should be celebrated but not England.

After 55 minutes it was apparent we were sitting too deep yet in the following 35 minutes Southgate made one sub to try and change it. Despite results far better than I ever imagined possible I'm left thinking "What could have been if..?" At the crucial moment we saw the finishing line and panicked and Southgate fiddled while Rome burnt! I hope learns from it!

Decent performance this tournament, it was nice to see an England side put more than two passes together before lumping it up or playing a long ball to a winger. We were at least as good as Croatia but they deserved the win in the end. As I said before, we need a creative midfielder and the Premier League stifles their development as all the key positions are occupied by amazing foreign players: Modric, Salah, de Bruyne, Eriksen, Hazard, Mahrez, Mata, Sanchez to name but a few. The likes of MGW will be overlooked as long as we look abroad to fill that role in the short term, which is what the PL necessitates.

Where did I say you're not going there to win it? Of course you should. That doesn't mean you need to take out all the positives though.

Brazil doesn't count. Teams who have a player that wastes 30 minutes of the game clock diving don't count.

7 of that Starting XI tonight under 25. Also Foden, Sancho, Rashford, Loftus-Cheek, Sessegnon, Oxlade-Chamberlain extremely young and breaking through. If these players continue to develop to Kane's level of consistency i.e. become world class, then there will be a lot more expectation going into Qatar and rightly so.

Well I think they have done well this time, but ultimately Croatia deserved to win despite our first-half performance. We lacked the energy in midfield that Modric gave Croatia, that is where this game was lost in the second half. Is Henderson quite good enough or was it the formation?
Either way, can hold heads quite high, and altho been great to see the nation come together, its back to domestic football now!!

The difference a goal makes. If England had taken their second chances in the first half, Croatia looked on the verge of tiredness catching up with them, & crumbling. Instead they got the equaliser & a new lease of life.

Despite his pace, did Sterling actually go past a defender into a dangerous area, did he have a meaningful shot, did he pass to a team mate in a shooting position?

The officials allowed too much barging & body checking from the Croatians, which can be physically debilitating for players on the receiving end.

Both Trippier & Walker ran their hearts out early on, & got injured putting their bodies on the line, which eventually upset England's defensive capabilities as a unit. In the first half, the defence looked more than capable. Centre backs playing their way round the Croatian striker!

Pickford has the confidence & the ability to command his area needed at the top level. His distribution has usually been pretty accurate. And once again he made a crucial save to keep England in the game.

I thought England tried hard but were comprehensively beaten by a poor Croatia team who will do well to avoid a hammering off the French in the final.

As the pundits said at half time, Croatia were there for the taking. Second half it was if it were the England players who had played an exhausting 120 minutes a few days before and had been under the cosh in the first half. Twoddle kept on about us leaving two up front, which meant the midfield 3 had to keep running wide. So, why not shove someone else in the middle to counteract? First half when we were on top they still reverted to being negative at times as they did in the second half.

Kane's confidence during and since the Sweden game seems to have been shot. Seemed to be 'hiding' in that he wasn't really in any threatening positions nor causing any real problems. Whether that was down to the obsession of using Sterling road-runner, but with no end product, or Kane carrying some kind of injury as the pundits thought, something wasn't right with him. Perhaps mental exhaustion which also affected the rest of them.

Ali seems to be all hype although, again, carrying an injury didn't help. Lingard lightweight in the ability sense at international level as was Rashford when he came on. Vardy, bless him..he knows how to run behind players and thats about it.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted and at least they did play some good stuff. I found myself actually enjoying watching them play whereas I couldn't really be bothered because England football meant dull and dreary.

The French will beat them (best side, along with Belgium, in the tournament), but if Croatia are a poor team, then not sure how you would describe some of the other teams that went out early!

Did we play the last 10 or so minutes with 10 men as didn't Trippier go off injured after we had used all 4 subs?

I have to say I don't see the point of the third and fourth placed teams playing another game. Let them go home and rest up for their up coming seasons at their clubs. Just play the final and be done.

Spot on. In years to come, we will remember England getting to the semi-final, but nobody will remember whether we came third or fourth! I think Southgate will probably make changes, because some of our first team probably need this game like a hole in the head!!

The difference is 2fold, they move and our defence don’t go with the runners, our forwards are static, Kane especially seems to be hiding behind his man. Loftus Cheek is going to be some player, that’s my hope as Dier and Jones need ****ing off. Stones and Maguire look comfortable on the ball

Let’s be honest, Belgium just have better players. If you were making a combined team of the two sides, you’d probably be looking at:

    Courtois
    Alderweireld, Kompany, Maguire
    Meunier, Tielemans, Dembele, Chadli
    Hazard, De Bruyne
    Lukaku

And you could make a decent argument for Vertonghen ahead of Maguire.

Pickford must have had more touches of the ball than any other player in the tournament.

Play it out from the back, then pass it around the back 5 who eventually pass it back to Pickford to hit long either straight to the opposition or out of play.

England being shown for what they are..... average.
