No we can't, and don't call me Shirley.
Beat me to it
It's a bit bonkers and a complete testament to our season that this thread has even popped up. But if we win tomorrow then Chelsea and Arsenal will be 9 points ahead of us. Now, Chelsea and/or Arsenal will probably drop 9 points by the end of the season. But for us to catch them we need to win more or less every single game.
We are capable of matching almost anyone on our day, but I can't see us going on such a run. That means we need Chelsea and/or Arsenal to drop 9 points more than we drop. If we drop even just 9 points by the end of the season, leaving us on 68 points after 38 games, we would still need them to drop 18 (and a huge swing in goal difference). That's half the points left on offer, and I just can't see it happening.
Going to join Vic on the Old Rosie?
Until our opponents notice it and figure out how to counter it. As this is the Premier League and the other teams have a bunch of people paid loads to do exactly that, I'd say they've already noticed.
Not managed it so far!
Tomorrow is the real test! Benitez will know all about our latest tactical change and I'd be very surprised if he doesn't set them up 100% to counter us. Maybe we'll end up back to 3-4-3
Not a chance, Chelsea I still think when Hazard & Willian are on form they move the ball as good as anyone.
Arsenal have a 300k player, another who has signed for Juve sat on their bench along with £100m worth of centre forwards.
Let’s just take one game at a time & pull clear of 9th.
When were nearer the teams above us than the teams below us ill take this seriously
Ooh I forgot to mention, getting to Wembley would be brilliant too, whatever the outcome.
Not a prayer of making up 12 points. They are almost as far ahead of Wolves as Wolves are far ahead of Cardiff.
Arsenal, Wolves and Cardiff are all where their respective average performances warrant them to be 70% into the season.
There's just not enough season left. I've predicted results for Chelsea, Arsenal and Wolves. I've purposely predicted a bad run for the London clubs and been very biased with our own results. I still have us only just matching Chelsea on points and not catching Arsenal. A bridge too far I think.
Yep, they are swines...or worse.
We've been there once this season. It's nothing special.
But we can live in hope.
We've beaten two of those three..
Chelsea looked so great today too...
Of course we will give it a go but I'm telling you now we will not make up 12 pts on these 2 teams. It's not being negative but being realistic. Whatever happens between now and May we've had a season way beyond any of our expectations. My thoughts are already wondering about the summer and what we can do next season. I think 6th has to be our ambition and break the stranglehold of the top 6.
No point not living in hope. Go out to win every game by all means. I'm not getting my hopes up though. 7th would be amazing.
I do live in hope, Bill. When I put my head on the pillow at night I visualise the goals from Leicester, Shrews, Wham and Shrews. I hope I can add the Toon to that tomorrow.
As I said...I do live in hope.
A couple of years ago (Rotherham comes to mind) it was nearer nightmares...
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title.
But we’re way more likely to finish 6th than 18th which in itself proves how successful this season has been so far.
Arsenal and their next eight games
Our next 8 games...
I still think the best we can do is give them a scare, kind of nice to see none of them really fancying themselves too much for their game against us though!!
This thread feels 24hrs too soon.
Ask the same question this time tomorrow and lets say we've just beaten Newcastle? Well, then we might start looking up and not down...
But lose to Newcastle tomorrow and this thread starts to look a little foolish.
Thanks for sharing
Winning tomorrow gives us an outside chance but as you correctly say, losing or drawing hammers a lot of nails in the coffin for 6th place.
Don't think we have much chance of catching Arsenal, but the wheels are coming off at Chelsea, we've caught up 5 points in the last 6 games. Not saying it's likely but certainly not impossible.
I live in prime Gooner heartland and they are far from happy/confident right now
Sorry, forgot to say thanks for enlightening stats
Yep...so long as it's a win tomorrow.
I will be ecstatic with a top 10, but I believe if we win tomorrow, top 8 is there for the taking.
I'm sure there will be a queue of "told you so".
And I still won't care. 12 games left after Toon.
I agree. Just think threads like this, no matter how well intentioned, just make us sound a bit silly.
One step at a time.
You are Nuno and l claim my £5... lol
Seriously just great to be in a position where we can even realistically ask the question...
One game at a time as Nuno would say.
We would have had a better chance had Mourinho stayed at Man U.
Small squad plus FA cup are a bit of a worry. We would need pretty much everything to go in our favour and no slip ups.
Having said that I'll continue to dream until it's no longer possible . I think I said 10th to 14th at the start of the season so I'm already in a Wanderers Wonderland .
I know what you mean, but I think it beats waiting to the end of the season and saying we shouldn't be disappointed with finishing 9th and losing to Man City in the semi-final of the Cup.
Before our blip we were averaging 1.8 ppg since our blip we have been averaging 2 ppg. Yes our blip cost us but if we can keep our form top 6 is possible... just
Mate I'm 100% with you.. nothing wrong with dreaming, I've mentioned elsewhere I'm already worrying about having enough loyalty points fof that Europa qualifier in August. Already pre-empted the missus that I'll be going away with the lads..
It's just whenever we all get carried away we always seem to end up being disappointed. Just hope this time tomorrow we won't be.
You’re right. IMO our main focus should be FA Cup now. Silverware is something that will attract players of the calibre needed to break the top 6.
