Yeah but a lot less subs then. The game plan now is work your nads off for an hour or so then get replaced ..

A big difference coming into a successful team with an established pattern of play as opposed to a struggling side where a young player's confidence could be shattered.

Was hoping for Roberto, found out it was Dino, then just gave up when he saw the training ground :(

Haven’t read the thread because I’m ****ed & there’s a lot of **** in it looking at the first few posts.

Currently we have quality replacements for every position. We’re not going so sign anyone better so I’m expecting zero transfers this window & I suggest you all do the same.

I do think we would benefit from signing another quality striker, although I accept it is far harder to find a decent player in the Jan window.

Boly and Jimenez get injured. We wouldnt have the required replacements. Yes Saiss and Dendoncker have played in defence but they are not out and out defenders in the mould of Boly. Jimenez has no direct replacement either so it probably isnt the case that we have quality replacements for each position.

    Patricio
    Bennett Coady Boly
    Doherty Neves Moutinho Jonny
    Costa Jimenez Jota

    Ruddy/Norris
    Dendoncker ? ?
    ?
    Gibbs-White Saiss Vinagre
    Traore Bonatini Cavaleiro

That's kinda how I see it. We have a very good first XI, and in some positions we have a good back-up to come in. But some positions the back-up aint so good, and in other positions there's no back-up at all. Assuming Bonatini leaves, we need a right wing back, centre half and a striker.

The thing about that 18 though is they are all good players. Bring someone in and one of those doesn’t make the squad.

Which is why any new player has to be an upgrade.

For me we definitely need in this window or in the summer a new central defender, a new wing back, a new forward and a new number 9.

I kind of get where you're coming from but you don't necessarily have 2 players for every position. It's not like the players we have can only play one position. In reality, the way I see it (and assuming Bonatini goes) this is our squad: -

GK - Patricio - Cover - Ruddy, Norris

CB - Bennett, Coady, Boly - Cover - Saiss, Dendoncker

    RWB - Doherty - Cover - Jonny

LWB, Jonny - Cover - Vinagre

CM - Neves, Moutinho - Cover - Saiss, Dendoncker, MGW

RF - Costa - Cover - Traore, Cavaleiro

LF - Jota - Cover - Cavaleiro, Traore

    CF - Jimenez - Cover - Jota

I completely agree that ideally we'd bring in another wing back, centre back and striker for the optimum squad, but only if they're players who we can bring in to improve the squad not just make up the numbers.

By the time we get to the end of January, there'll only be 14 games (+ cup games assuming we're still in it). To me, those additions would be useful now but if we had to go with what we have until the summer it wouldn't be the end of the world.

They're absolute musts for the summer though, on top of replacements for any players who may potentially move on.

Know what you mean but I do think we're maybe 1 or 2 short right now. But Nuno likes a small squad so weve gotta trust him!

Our recruitment over the last 2 years has been brilliant, except for 1 teandancy that I don’t like. We seem to keep weakening ourselves before a replacement has been confirmed. By this I mean flogging Dicko and failing to get Locadia, flogging Douglas and failing to get Cancelo, flogging Hause and signing who???

As things currently stand we have left ourselves (unnecessarily) very short at CB and weaker than we were last season. I can understand selling players, but how does Wolverhampton Wanderers benefit from loaning Hause to Vile, especially when that means our only specialist cover for Boly, Coady and Bennett is now a former futsal (wtf is that?!?!) player from Maidenhead! Even last season we had Batth, Miranda and Hause. I can only assume we are close to signing a replacement, as otherwise that’s a case of prioritising a player’s needs over the club’s needs, and that is wrong. Either way we need to stop getting rid of players before we sign someone, especially if it’s just a poxy loan.

We also need to not fall into this trap of saying a player covers every position as a get out for not buying someone. We need specialist players, not 15 Kevin Foleys. Saiss is either a defender or a midfielder, not both.

I agree with people that we could do with a wing back, but I think we could probably get away with that for now. Farmer Giles looks really good and I wouldn’t be too concerned if he had to play.

I do think we need a striker, but unless Bonatini leaves, I think the defence remains the priority. Who would you rather have on the bench: Kilman or Bonatini?

    Perfect window ( 3 CB’s, 1 wing back, 1 physical CM, 1 St, 1 Winger)

Good (1 cb, 1 wing back, 1 st)

    Acceptable (1 Cb, 1 st)

    Poor window, anything else.

We’ve gone wrong in the past when we’ve had two sets of average players for each position. The result - we never knew our best team. Because there wasnt one.

Nuno’s smaller squad approach is much better, IMO.

With too large a squad it gets harder to keep those not playing regularly happy...

We do, but my point was only 1 injury and our 1st team squad no longer fills a premier league team sheet....

Smaller squad is ok as long as you dont get injuries or suspensions racking up. Our squad is probably too small now though. We could do with a fine balance. Not too big but not too small.

This is how I see it, we all know the three positions that we need to strengthen, but baring a catastrophic injury crises we have enough quality to cover for now.
So I am reasonably relaxed about waiting until the summer and getting some genuine quality in, of course if someone is available now then we should go for it.

If we cant get anyone in before the window then maybe we could promote Donovan Wilson to the first team squad or Ennis/ Ashley Seal. Maybe we could recall Rafa Mir? I dont know how Miranda is getting on with his loan spell but could we recall him?

Ooh I know! as well as a clinical finisher, a central defender and wing back cover a really attack minded central midfielder would be a good addition, especially now that Nuno has started experimenting with two forwards and three in the middle.
If we get top quality players in those positions we will be flying.
Like I said above, unless truly class options are available now, I am happy to wait until summer.
