Whenever I’m critical of this team, I do have to keep reminding myself of where we’ve come from, and how we should just enjoy it for where we are, but at the same time, there’s always the where we’re going to, and how to improve ourselves to get there, and the one biggy that is failing us at the moment is keeping possession.

Willy Boly is one of the big offenders, and it’s what will keep him from being a top end defender with his distribution, but the one that is driving me crazy at the moment is Rui’s ball out to Doherty on the right.

I’m sure there’s a statistician out there, but it’s got to be over 70% of them going straight out of play, and tonights latest one leading straight to Newcastle’s goal. Something that should have been entirely preventable.

The question is though, why is it still happening? It’s easy to blame Rui for the crap throw/kick, or Doherty for the crap attempt at collecting it, but why on earth hasn’t Nuno spotted it and clamped down? It just isn’t working.

Keeping possession is so critical at this level, yet game on game we’re giving it straight to the opposition in an attacking area.

For me, we really need to start getting Coady taking goal kicks, and Rui restricted to rolling the ball out where possible.

It’s baffling that we haven’t already clamped down on it.

It was a kick, being as you can’t get that right I will abstain from the rest of the thread

It would be nice to get it factually correct

That was the first time that happened all night. Rui played short goal kicks all game. They have clearly tried something new today

To be honest the two of them are brilliant at it . Doherty wins the header a lot of the time

It is a tactic from nuno , and it makes sense hitting a tall player against a short wide player , in an area where we can get bodies to a second ball

No good hoofing to jiminez to lose it isolated .

I would like to see coady and boly come short for it more often and ping a 70 yard switch of play, but current tactic is fine. I think we did actually play out from the back a bit more today

Spot on. Rui had a 67% pass accuracy rate which is far higher than the Premier League average for goalkeepers this season.

Either way, we have to defend far better for the goal, regardless of any miskick from Rui.

Exactly! Sad thing for goalkeepers is one mistake usually ends up costing you. Good to see them try and change it up rather than the usual ball out to Doherty.

I don't think Rui covered himself in glory on what was a stoppable shot, either.

Sounds very Sunday league when the kid that can kick it the furthest takes them!

Since Dendoncker has been in the side, we've been much more effective with Rui trying to hit either he or Doherty. The fact he kicked one directly out play really hasn't led to a goal which occurred on the opposite side of the pitch.

While he should have saved it, I think his experience got the better of him, like Rico for Fulham the other day when Pogba scored. He went out to cover a potential cross or shot across goal, but Hayden blasted it in at the near post which is very unlikely to happen.

Not sure the OP understands percentages, and it was the only bad kick he did all night

Awful piece of goalkeeping really but he's still the best we've got by some distance. I am getting a bit annoyed with him though, factoring in his distribution. Obviously the English game is a lot different to what he's used to and he had a solid 1st half of the season but I've been a bit disappointed for a while now. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but I expect a bit better from Portugal's #1.

Its about where we are allowed to lose the ball. Much better to lose it wide and long where we can generally contain the ball than central where opposition can apply pressure.

I used to play in the sticks at Under 10s and for a few years after, good keeper but I was small for a few years and as such had weak kicks. When we moved to the big pitches, our massive centre half used to take our goal kicks as I couldn't get enough height on them.

Imagine the scenes if Wolves, a professional football club in the 'best league in the world', were doing this. I'd laugh my balls off!

These are the passing stats for all the Goalkeepers that have played 10 games or more, sorted by Inaccurate Long-balls (InAccLB).

    Long Balls.jpg

Rui is 14th on the list. Only Chelsea's, Man City's, Liverpool's, Spurs, Bournemouth's and Arsenal's GKs have less accurate long balls on average per game.

This demonstrates that a long kick with a specific target allows him to be amongst the GKs with the least Inaccurate Long-balls.

Rui on average has 6.6 accurate and 9.5 inaccurate Long Balls per game, an accurate percentage of 40.99%, 10th on this list of 20 GKs with 10 or more appearances.

So yes, Rui could be more accurate and yes, it's frustrating when it goes out of play, but he's mid-table with regards to his accuracy, so not as poor as it might appear.

We will probably keep possession more often doing it than just kicking it down the middle like your Cardiffs, Watfords and Burnleys and this appears to be a specific instruction from Nuno, so won't stop any time soon.

As for Coady taking goal kicks, it just doesn't work at this level. Whilst his long pass accuracy is much higher than Rui's, you invite much more pressure on your back-line if you have a defender starting so deep. In theory, a team could just sit two players on the edge of the 18 yard box and if they win the long-ball, they are onside and could be in on goal.

Why are keepers with higher ratings below the Cardiff guy ?

I've sorted it by Inaccurate Long Balls (InAccLB), not by rating. The rating stats mean very little.

    I think it’s a reasonable observation.

I question the stats though. How do they record a long ball where both Doc and their defender both contest the ball evenly?

I’ve seen nearly every game this season. I would guess that the ball goes straight out of play about 10% of the time. Of the remainder, Doc wins the headers about 60:40 but then it’s 50:50 whether we win the second ball. Overall we therefore keep possession from not much more than 50% of Rui’s possession.

As the OP says, possession is key. I was much more happier in previous years when we almost always played the ball short to a defender. Build from the back !!
