It really is blindingly obvious that that's the case, as much as I love Rui.

Nuno and the team quite quickly identified that as an issue, and have basically said "keep those kicks wide", as putting them down the middle could put us in a world of bother. Therefore, they've trained on hitting Doherty with the kicks/flick one.

I mention it in the OP here

    John Ruddy

Some interesting views on Ruddy there, and considering practically 70% of people wanted him dropped for Norris (I wasn't one of them, by the way), why the hell are we having a conversation about him taking over from Patricio??!!

No, I don't want to see Ruddy have a run.

That would be kamikaze. Opposition lumping the ball towards an open goal while Ruddy is running around the town centre.

We've come on a lot over the last two years - but we're not good enough to let our keepers go out on a run during matches.

Ruddy is a more commanding presence in the penalty area and wouldnt be pushed around as easily ie Cardiff first goal. But i think Patricio is the better overall keeper i just think he flaps a little when under pressure which i didn't expect.
If i was Ruddy i would look for a move next season he's too good to sit on the bench.

It's not broken so don't try and fix it. Rui has won us more points than he has lost us this year. He's been culpable for a couple of goals conceded but so has Alisson for Liverpool who is considered by many to be the best in the business at the moment. In terms of commanding the box, this is a common trend for continental goalkeepers when they first arrive in the Premier League (take De Gea for example - appreciate he was a much younger keeper but he got battered from pillar to post during his first season when anything came into the box). I'm confident Rui will iron this out.

Last season we had everyone banging the Ruddy needs benching after Norris has a couple of steady cup games, We now have people wanting Rui benching for Ruddy?? Norris will only ever be a back up/squad player at Premier league and championship level, Ruddy would be a good first choice for a lower half Prem team (which I am sure we are aiming above) and a great back up. Rui is a world class goal keeper who has performed around the world on the biggest stage consistently for years its not even a close contest for number one. Still learning the English game, won us far more points already than he has cost us, kicking isn't his string skill set but my first concern from a goal keeper is keeping the ball out the net. As for the kicking to Doc this is clearly something that he has been told by Nuno or the coaching team or I am sure it would have been addressed by now. Always amazes me how much better plays become to fans while they are out of the team, short memories.

I thought Ruddy's distribution wasn't any better than Patricio's to be honest, when he sent it long it was usually aimless and wasn't even targeting a player most of the time, at least Patricio tries to pick out a player (usually Doherty).

I don't really rate Ruddy based on last season but he did well on Monday overall. Still wouldn't have him near the starting XI though. Yes, Patricio has some weaknesses such as command of his area but I haven't forgotten Ruddy constantly flapping at crosses last season either.

I'm actually inclined to agree. Rui's footwork is brilliant, and this allows him to be in the correct position as the shot comes in. Usually when he's been beaten from range, it's been when he's unsighted. As we tend to defend deep in numbers, this is a risk unfortunately.

Both are OK but I've never been convinced by either. Still in with an outside chance of Europe though so not doing too bad but goalkeeping is a position which needs looking at in the next couple of seasons.

Can't help but compare to the last time we had a team in Europe. Phil Parkes was always OK and could pull off some top class saves but then blunder. Perhaps, back then, if a couple of defensive positions had been strengthened and perhaps a keeper ( Gordon Banks and perhaps Bob Wilson who both were linked with coming here) then I suggest a bit more might have been achieved.

Mind you in 1972 McGarry had been here 4 yrs and inherited a club with some fine players anyway. Nuno has had barely two years and Fosun started with a club very much going nowhere so time is still on his/their side.

If there's ever a time to play Ruddy it would be against a team like Cardiff. Interesting call.

'Cardiff, only Cardiff', the next game is all that matters is his mantra, isn't it? So he's contradicting himself with this by bringing in an inferior keeper for a league game to prepare for the cup in 2 weeks time. A strange week from Nuno, first his subs on Tuesday and now this.

Lets hope Ruddy plays well, it won't look good for Nuno if he performs as he did in the Shrewsbury games.

That's a BIG call from Nuno. I wouldn't have announced it publicly yet either, that will give Colin time to adjust any tactics he may have had for our goalkeeper. I see the logic behind it. If it is Nuno's intention to keep John in nets for United, he could definitely do with practice in the "easier" of the two upcoming league matches.

Personally think it’s because he’s expecting Cardiff to bombard the box a bit so Ruddy’s strength and ability to pick crosses out the air has got him between the sticks.
Probably just mentioning the cup game because he can’t openly say Rui isn’t strong enough.

Although Ruddy had a lot of clean sheets last season there were also a lot of howlers. So no I would not drop Rui even though Nuno has said that Ruddy will start vs Cardiff.

I think they are both pretty equal so not too fussed either way.

What I will say though, I’m more happy to see that Nuno has the balls to drop Rui.

I would say within a couple of seasons neither will be at the club, we need a ball playing keeper in the Ederson mould, however they are like rocking horse manure to find.

Patricio man lovers please stop having a hissy fit just because Ruddy is ugly and doesn’t have a nice beard.
We have got a keeper that is not going to be rooted to his line on crosses, communicates and won’t be bullied like what happened at their place.
The fact Boly chose not to pass back to Patricio on 2 easy occasions against Huddersfield obviously resonated.

Our backs will have more confidence.

    Deal with it.

Unlike Nuno to speak about individuals quite so much. I'd say the same for his discussion of Traore in the other E&S interview.

Clearly a calculating move, and only time will tell whether it works out. If we were to lose to Cardiff but beat United with a Ruddy masterclass, I'd say that's Nuno vindicated. I certainly wouldn't decry him at this stage. Additionally, as one of the best managers in our club's recent history, and as a former goalkeeper, I have a fair amount of faith in his decision.

Would also echo previous comments that it's encouraging to see that no player is untouchable in Nuno's team.

What about poor form and lack of confidence?
There's no doubt that if both keepers are 'on it', in a side by side comparison Rui wins hands down every time. The truth is Rui hasn't been 'on it' for quite some time and Ruddy is chomping at the bit for a bigger bite of the Prem. I'd rather a confident keeper than one that isn't, despite how much better on paper they appear.
*edit- However, if Nuno brings Costa on ahead of Traore again, I'll definitely lose my schit!!!

Well...yeah. Rui also seems to have livened up in the coming out and punching away crosses dept too in last couple of games.
    Intriguing.
