With John Ruddy having better distribution via kicks, roll outs and throws. Is it time for Patricio to have a backseat for a few games, he doesn't do great on crosses and kicks are dire.Would a change for a few games do him good.Thoughts please.

No. Not even a remote consideration in my mind.

I like Ruddy and he’s great back-up. He is just levels below Patricio.

Yes from me, I really don't think he is a level below Rui

If Patricio is seen as the better keeper, what happens when we reach the semis..

How is giving him a rest for a few games going to improve his kicking? Which, actually, is not 'dire'. Ruddy did well on Monday and for us last season, but if you think he's an upgrade on Patricio you have a short memory.

That's a no from me. Admittedly Ruddy distributes the ball better but Rui is a better keeper in my opinion. I would however like to see some variation on his kicks, instead of hitting them at Doc on the sideline.

Yes thats my point really, if you look at the top teams all there keepers are better with there feet.Patricio for me is suspect on crosses, he is a good shot stopper, but distribution for a top keeper is poor.

Swapping Ruddy for Rui because he's better at kicking is like swapping Adama for Diogo because he's quicker.

So, we have a goal kick and our 3 central defenders are marked. Apart from trying to hit Doc, which appears to be the best chance of retaining the ball, what variation would you suggest?

That is a very valid point. One that people seem to have ignored. For me if that turns out to be the case then he must keep his place.

I wonder if he is told to kick the ball to Doc.
    I like Ruddy
I wonder if he is told to kick to Doc constantly. I like Ruddy, and it would be great if Rui could distribute as accurately as he does. I do think Rui is a better shot stopper and that is what you look for first in a keeper.

Possibly, so there's no malaise for Rui if we ship 5+ at Citeh.

We can all say "Well, we'd never have conceded that many with our first choice 'keeper".

    It's perfect!

If nothing else just a variation in the goal kicks. If us fans know the kick is going to Doc you can bet the opposition are expecting it.
Someone suggested a couple of weeks ago that maybe Coady could take them.

    Edit
I shoul have said that by variation I mean hitting to the other wing now and again or trying to hit Raul.

Coady isn't going to be taking the goal kicks unless he's playing in goal. But even if he was, what's he going to do with them? He's going to be aiming for Doc. I've asked this question on a different thread. Everyone wants variations but no one can suggest any.

Can people stop this myth that ruddys kicking is good . Yes it’s better than patricios, but both keepers are so uncomfortable kicking .

No idea what they do all week .

People also seem to forget the confusion between ruddy and coady on at least one occasion Monday.

Both keepers need to improve massively on collecting crosses and kicking but Patricio is stilll first choice - ruddy is a mistake waiting to happen. Most mistakes a championship keeper made last year that led to goals iirc , which says something behind the best defence

Alternatively let's do nothing differently and continue to watch every 2nd or 3rd goal kick sail over Docs head into touch.

Both boly and Bennet to come short and ping it into the channel , for a run made by jiminez , and wolves to win a throw half way inside opposition half

No, because Ruddy would come in and people would start slaughtering him again like they did last season. Hypersensitivity to flaws in our goalkeepers is a theme on this forum.

It's not just Rui's kicking that's weak, receiving a back pass, controlling and playing the ball out is poor.
These days top keepers are almost keeper- sweepers.
When the ball is played back to Rui and an opponent is close, it's nearly always very nervy with at best the ball booted out.

Can we stop the myth that Ruddy did anything different to Rui in terms of kicking? He lumped it upfield every time until Doherty came on, then he started kicking it directly to him just like Rui does. The only reason he didn't do it earlier in the match was because Doherty wasn't playing.

How about hitting the occasional one at Raul centrally with Jota or Traore running past him looking for the flick on.

He's nowhere near Patricio's level. Watch highlights of some matches from last season where we conceded goals if you want some evidence

Ruddy has slightly better distribution, and his commanding of the box is possibly "as good as" Rui's.

Rui's shot stopping and footwork is world class.

Don't even get me started on his one v one's. And this will be called on a hell of a lot more as the season goes on. In this department, he's up there with the best in the world.

Why do people think the goalkeeper chooses to kick it to doc every time

It’s clearly a tactic of ours decided by nuno and his team, and to be fair to doc , he wins the header most times

I’m sorry to the OP but I think sentiment has got the better of you. Patricio is miles better than Ruddy.

Ruddy for Patricio would be like Barry Douglas for Jonny. Free kicks and corners didn’t save Douglas, goal kicks won’t save Ruddy.

I accept that Patricio is better than John Ruddy but they are both excellent goalkeepers.
Ruddy won us the game at Cardiff with that fingertip save then the penalty save, his fingertip save the other night arguably won us the tie.

Listen I know Patricio has made some stupendously good saves, but he is weak on crosses and at kicking. Would Ruddy have stopped a few goals such as v Cardiff this season, that Rui let in?
