I was only thinking the other night after the Liverpool game - how come the so-called pundits are not singing the praises of our teenager Ruben Vinagre at all, instead of concentrating solely on the Liverpool teenagers!!?

He has been gradually gaining confidence and improving with each game.

I am so excited about the potential our Ruben. He can become an absolutely terrific player for us, especially with Nuno as his mentor.

I like the fact that he has the tricky skills to take on defenders and go past them and get in to great positions to set up a goal scoring chance. I thought he got a couple of good crosses in against Liverpool but unfortunately we didn’t have anyone who attacked his cross /anticipated where his cross was going, ie into the six yard box. (that’s the only criticism I have of Raul, fantastic player that he is too).

Coincidentally, there is an article on Ruben in the E&S today and I totally agree with the writer. I feel we need to keep him in the team to gain that vital experience.

Jonny is a good “average” (ie compared to RV) player but, IMO, is weak in the last third as he very rarely takes a player on or really drives forward when the opportunity arises. He doesn’t seem to have any conviction /confidence in his shooting ability either.

What does Nuno do now with this situation - keep playing Jonny (a predominately right footed player playing on the left) who will be returning to his parent club at the end of the season, or stick with RV now for him to grow and to start to fulfill the enormous potential he undoubtedly has?:)

Yes, I was very impressed with him!

I wonder if he should play left-side of the front 3 when we struggle at home?... .wlth Jota in the middle and Raul on the right?

I think vinagre has potential to be a good player but not the world class title people brandish about
I think some folks are still hung up on the kyle walker video and are dazzled by the step overs. Doherty is far better at taking his man on albeit he is much older.
Don’t get me wrong I think he’s a decent player and still very young, but I just think his potential is overrated. Hopefully I’m wrong though and he sets the world on fire

I like him and think he will have a decent career, but he's not as good as Jonny at the minute. He also needs to do a lot of work with his right foot, he looks so uncomfortable on it and defenders are learning he won't cut back and use it

His passing holds him back a bit right now. He will become a very, very good footballer once he sorts that out. I do actually think he will become one of the best in his position.

There is this massive assumption that Jonny won't stay. I really see it as 50/50.

It won't come down to whether Atleti want him back, it's entirely down to whether Jonny wants to stay in my opinion. Does anyone know the answer to this? I dont.

I have often thought the exact same, Lawndog. Great minds, eh? :p

He certainly has the ability to “unlock” defences, and he would probably track back and defend well, too!

I wonder if Nuno has given this any thought?:)

The lad is going to be a star, without a doubt. You can call it youthful exuberance but the confidence he has in his own ability, for someone who hadn't played a competitive match until last season, is unbelievable. It wouldn't surprise me if you soon see him trying to take a free kick ahead of Neves!

In my view as I said elsewhere, he MUST play in the home games where we have struggled to beat teams who dig in

He is an outstanding prospect. Would love us to sign a few more Vinagre style up and coming players for the squad.

Oh how the Spanish national football team has declined when only "good average" players can break into the squad.

It's worth noting he's still only bloody 19. How many players of that age have we tried to promote to the first team, or even loan out to conference sides and they failed to impress. The fact he doesn't look out of place, even if he's far from the finished product, is pretty amazing.

I think part of that was that the Liverpool teenagers looked like 12 year olds. Vinagre looks like a bloke now, he's filling out and strengthening.
When RV first came on this season as a sub, he did a couple of bursts - he'd gained about 2 yards of pace from last year. Lightening he is.

He plays with his head up and has vision. A bit of technique work and more experience and he's got the potential to be an elite left full back.

I think Vinagre will probably be our first choice LWB next season. Jonny has been signed as a stop-gap (albeit a quite excellent one) as Vinagre continues his development.

At Vinagre age Doherty was playing in Irish reserve league at center half.

    Like Huddersfield?

    Or Cardiff away.

Didn't we just have a thread about Vinagre the other day?

He's nowhere near Jonny's level. Simple really.

Jonny is far superior to Vinagre at this moment in time. I do like Vinagre but he is a bit overrated on here and on social media IMO. Good potential but a long way to go yet.

I'd love to see him play more, and it doesn't need to be at the expense of Jonny. From what I've seen, Jonny looks better offensively when played on the right, so there's no reason why we can't rotate more often - any two from three (give Doherty a rest every now and then).

Agree with that, in the current time Jonny is possibly Wolves best defender, especially in one on one situations which is vital against Man City.

To be honest Jonny frustrates me sometimes. I would rather have Vinagre down the left. He's always trying something, looking to get forward, etc. Gives something extra for the opposition to worry about. Just needs to work on the final ball/his crossing. Fix that and with his mesmerising step overs, well they goggle eye me, he'll be a real asset. Plus, I think he's got more old gold n black heart than Jonny.

Vinagre is great, really impressive for his age and his potential is enormous.

Jonny is still relatively young as well but the difference is he has about 200 top tier appearances. Tactically he's streets ahead of Rúben.

Having players in the same position with different characteristics within the same well drilled system is in fact Plan B.
