I don't necessarily disagree but the issue is if it happens what will be the outcome, relegation?

If not what premium are you prepared to pay to buy players to cover potential injuries when you could have far greater value with a more planned approach in the summer.

certainly fits our business model but it's a lot of money for a young centre back. Could be a fantastic signing though, if there's any truth.

Also an impact on prize money as there is around £2m per position. Difference between 7th and 14th could be as much as £14m - something not to be sniffed at.

So would you gamble £14m on a player to achieve it?

I should clarify from that previous post, it came across far more belligerently than I intended. I only mean that if you can't see the merits of that side of the argument, we're clearly only going to go round in circles on it so there isn't much point continuing any debate.

All transfers are gambles. If we finish 7th with that player it pays for itself.

It’s far harder to sign players now. Acknowledge that at least.

I'll clarify too, as a long suffering fan, like many, the more players we sign the better, but just think we need to apply some balance and far rather spend in the summer if it gains better value, but if we spend £50m tomorrow I'll be well happy.

I’m not so sure any player thinking of coming to us would turn us down on our final league position (9th or 14th) yes of course it looks better if we finish higher, but i think there’s a whole load of other factors come before that such as playing style, potential and the fireworks.

One thing is certain to me.

No one wants success on the pitch more than Fosun - the owners.

    And so just relax.

Burnley hardly have the ambition to match where they finished, have they? To them it wouldn't have made much of a difference as they sign the likes of Chris Wood regardless. For us, if we go to a player like Joao Cancelo, finishing 9th vs 14th may make a big difference as to whether they want to come here. But as I said previously, I'm not going to go round in circles with anyone who can't see the validity in that point of view.

Are you the new WW1963? I’m sure you’re just being deliberately obtuse or trolling.

Yes, it must have been a tough sell for both of them, since we finished low in the chump previously.
But there was the promise of being guaranteed first choice, for two players that weren’t getting game time.
To different extents because of their ages, both careers had stalled.

They were offered the chance to be the main man, other relatively big signings coming in, and if they did what people knew they were capable of (ego massaging), a ticket to the top table.

    Slightly different situation now.
Surely we’ll be trying to sign players that are in less of a slump, it’s already a place in the prem, and there will be other decent size/level clubs after them as well.

Lot easier to tell a player that’s at one of the bigger clubs in the inferior European leagues that they could be the ones to take us to the Europa, or win a domestic cup, if we’re upper mid table than just above the relegation scrap.
Everyone loves a bit of ego-stroking, but most can also smell bull****.
‘You’re the missing cog son, you can take us to the next level’ is pretty irrelevant if the next level looks to be 10th, rather than clawing up ground on the top 6.

Will ignore your pathetic first paragraph, Leicester finished 9th and West Ham 13th last season, so Leicester were the bigger attraction?

I appreciate it isnt easy to get top players in but surely having Mendes on side must be a massive plus? It will be interesting to see what we do in comparison to other prem clubs this window and who they and we bring in. Dont get me wrong. I'm really happy with Fosun and Nuno etc but I am uneasy at how small our squad is and what a few injuries could do. We are in a really good position now and in a great position to strengthen with a couple of additions this month.

    A very good point Geoff.
Getting high quality young players on loan has worked very well for us over the past couple of seasons.
Please can we find a superb young striker [or two] using the same business model??
Especially with an option to buy if possible!! ;):):)

One aspect of this however is the fact that every indication is that Nuno wants a small squad supplemented by some of the youngsters. If we want success especially if, sorry I mean when, we get into Europe we will need that larger squad.

BBC Gossip: Wolves have been linked with a move for Liverpool striker Divock Origi in the January transfer window. Origi, 23, scored in the FA Cup tie between the two teams on Monday but has only started one Premier League game this season. (Birmingham Mail)

Just seen that on the Red Button too Lupo, it's who I fancied to come in, that is until I saw him play on Monday - scored the goal but otherwise didn't do enough to have needed his shirt washing after the match IMHO.

I feel the same; undoubted talent and an eye for goal, but is he right for us, even if he does have the work ethic that looked a little suspect on Monday? You would like to think so, being a professional footballer, but we've seen it lacking many times before. In Nuno we trust and all that.
