Definitely Ruddy for the game against manure. At least when he kicks the ball out its over the halfway line.

I think Nuno will play Ruddy but I wouldn’t. Our priority should be the FA cup, not the league from here on in. If Nuno feels obliged to play Ruddy then give him a league game or 2. Personally I wouldn’t play him in either, because it’s not a sympathy vote here, we need to play our best team to try and win.

Why should Ruddy get preferential treatment over the likes of Gibbs White, Saiss, Costa, Cavaleiro, Traore and Vinagre? I don’t see people calling for them to start. The same principle does apply to them too, they also shouldn’t play. On the topic of keeping people happy, would Patricio be happy not playing in an FA cup final if we reached it? I doubt it and it’s more important to keep him happy than Ruddy.

Play your best team and try to win, don’t bottle it like England in the summer.

Yes he should - he's our cup goalkeeper which is the price you have to pay for having a semi decent number 2.

Also, without his save against Liverpool, we may not have still been in the competition.

We have to go full strength from now on, although I would not be overly concerned if Ruddy was retained for whatever reason.

Big John might be our Cup talisman.....could be he turns out to be our hero.

Sure he started off rusty but he has grown into it as he's loosened up.

Sometimes it's just meant to be with certain situations.....who's going to still moan if he sets Jota away for the winner with one of his kicks against united??

Stop this negative thinking over him and look at it differently......you'd think it was some circus clown we were planning to go with!!!:mad:

    This, 100%!
Rui is our number 1 and has to play .

Surely the same sentiment being shown to Ruddy, could apply to the 'second string' outfield players, who have been used so far for cup games?

It has to be our strongest Team, BIG TIME .

I'm pretty sure he'll stick with Ruddy. Patricio hasn't been in the squad for the 4 cup games so far, with Norris on the bench. I saw somewhere on here that Patricio was in London with his family last weekend so not even at the game.

    Should we? No.

    Will we? Almost certainly.

Biggest one-off game for this club in many, many years, probably since the play-off final. If we're going to beat Man Utd in the form they're in, we need a full strength side, a full and bouncing Molineux and a bit of luck on our side. I hope Nuno realises just how much we want this and acts accordingly. Patricio has to start and that will almost certainly alienate Ruddy and mean he'll be gone in the summer, but for me that is worth it.

Cavs scored the winner in the last 2 rounds, I don’t want him to start if Jotas available.

Think it suits Ruddy to play the matches where there’s gonna be lots to do. Think his concentration drops a bit in games where we have most of the ball.

I'm quite surprised at the tone / remarks of some posters against Ruddy. I like Rui and think he's a good goalie (obvious), but he's not perfect i.e. he does make mistakes. Reading some posts on here one could think that Ruddy should be playing for Oldham Athletic! (no offence). I'm not convinced that the gap between the 2 goalies is that large. I think Ruddy should and will play.

Yes we do. He's our cup keeper. He was brilliant against Liverpool, very solid against Bristol City and collected everything. Yes he made a mistake against Shrewsbury but a few days later Rui chucked the ball in his own net in the league and spent large chunks of the game booting it out of play.

Ruddy is fine and will play. The rest of the team though will be our 'usual' starting XI if everyone is fit, guaranteed.

Going to be very tough game, whoever plays in goal will have to have a 10/10 performance to give us any chance, I'm sorry but i think playing Ruddy will cost us in this competition in the end.

It´s just that it seems people need to point out that Ruddy is not in Patricios class because some seem to think it isn´t so.
The whole world of football rates Patricio head and shoulder above John Ruddy, and for us to go with the worse option is not logical.

John Ruddy is a second rate keeper. He is our backup for this reason.
I have nothing against Ruddy. He is what he is,and a perfectly suitable backup for the time being.

Don´t make him into something he has never been, and never will be though. There is perfect logical reasons why he is backup to Patricio, and not the other way around.Nuno has shown time and again that he as well rates Patricio well over Ruddy.
This same logical way of picking players should be our formula in the Cup as well..especially in a game that might very well be our single most important match for the last 15 years.

You don´t play reserves in a match like this.

IF Ruddy gets picked, the pressure on him will be absolutely immense.A mistake by him leading to our elimination will be a nightmare for him to handle.

End of the day, everyone knows that Patricio is quite far the better keeper in comparsion with Ruddy.
Ruddy is second rate, and wouldn´t play for many..if any..premiership team.

The reasons for picking him over Patricio against Man United isn´t logical.

What a *******s analogy. For your logic to fit here, you need to suggest we’re replacing Patricio with Sondergaard.

Depends what camera angle you watched it through. If you watched it on the St Patricio channel, he never touched it, Rui would have caught it.

Norris had some great performances in the cup competitions last year but was awful in the last game of the season at Sunderland. He made a number of mistakes and not just for the goals.

Ruddy performed brilliantly all last season in the league, with only a few bad games - every goalkeeper has a bad game now and again - did you see Patricio against Leicester or Newcastle? Ruddy was great against both Liverpool and Bristol City in the FA Cup this year and I think he deserves the opportunity to keep on playing. All of a sudden people are making him out to be terrible when he's a solid keeper and also making out that Patricio is amazing and never makes mistakes. I think Patricio is the better keeper but not by that much. They have different strengths and weaknesses. Rui's shot stopping his incredible but his kicking puts us under needless pressure time and time again.

I'd play Patricio, because he's the better keeper, there isn't even an argument to be had. I think Nuno will play Ruddy, BUT... if anyone knows how to handle a keeper and disappointments it'll be a guy who spent most of his playing career watching someone else play in his position on the pitch, and not letting personal disappointment get in the way of things

Taken from Wiki (I know anyone can edit it, but)

    Money's on Ruddy starting!

with united probably playing an open attacking game whoever is in goal will probably have a fair amount of work to do. To get out game going we will need to keep position and distribution from the back will be a key part to that. You could make an argument for bot Ruddy or Patricio play. Think Nuno will judge it when he comes to pick the team and look at who has looked sharpest in training that week.

Another factor might be penalties. Does anyone know their stats on penalty saves ?

I'm not sure Ruddy has a very good record with penalties. I'm sure after the Cardiff game last season when he saved one of the two penalties he told Mikey Burrows in the interview that he'd never saved a penalty before!

Just a thought, but does swapping goalie affect the defense?
We tend to play the same 5 defenders/wingers, will swapping Rui make them change the way they play?
I noticed Coady mentioned how Ruddy came for crosses, Rui doesn't so much.

The 5 regular defenders/wing backs have played far more this season with Rui, so are you suggesting swapping to Ruddy for Cup games has a negative impact on their performance?

Not at all, just opening up for debate.
All the experts say football is about a solid spine/understanding partnerships etc.
Therefor does changing keeper every week have a detrimental effect?
Do the back 3 need the same understanding with the goalie?

Edit: suppose i am saying playing Ruddy for cup games with our 1st teams defence is wrong.

Not an easy decision, whilst being an important one-off game with huge reward there is also sending out the right message to the team. If (and it's a big if - I have absolutely no idea) there is any kind of gentleman's agreement in place between JR/RP and NES and it's well known by the rest of the players, to go against that agreement for whatever reason may just plant tiny, tiny seeds of doubt/disagreement in the minds of the players and could have consequences later on down the line. Of course it's very easy to overthink these things but I am a big believer in harmony and the importance of psychology, it's a tough decision for the boss man but whoever is between the sticks will get my support....I rate both keepers highly.
