I always thought that Bonatini was overrated, even when he was scoring. He played in a team in first half of last year that no other team could live with, he had loads of chances and whilst he scored, he also missed a fair few. His goals to chances wasn’t clinical, he just got loads of chances. Everyone seems to think this guy was a brilliant striker who suddenly lost it and didn’t score for a year. This is first time that I’ve seen someone share my thoughts in that any average striker would have got goals.

I mean, he did take the Vile to 3 successive 6th place finishes as recently as 2009 to be fair, so it hasn't been that long since his fall from grace. Agree he's not a manager you'd expect to thrive in 2019 though.

He got Villa to 6th by blowing every budget he was given and then walked when he wasn't given even more. His reckless overspending started the whole Vile financial implosion and likely FFP problems

He spent about average of 20m

When he left they bought bent for 25m so don’t think he’s just to blame for overspending especially seems ffp wasn’t even a thing then

You are correct about FFP BUT as he had blown the budget subsequent managers had to make cut upon cut.. despite that, as the owner's didn't want to put more money in, Vile's finances didn't stabalise.

To be fair, he had to spend money on the squad, when he came in they'd just finished 16th and were dire. £120m over four seasons for 3 successive top 6 finishes seems a solid return in my book. It was after O'Neill when they started ****ing money up the wall.

What were Forest thinking appointing ONeil?! Forest fans already getting frustrated with him due to the dreadful style football they have started playing since he arrived.

It was more than the money if i remember, but the way he managed that, the team, the fans and the owner.
He argued for money to get into Europe, and when they had a big European tie (CSKA?) he rested 8 players so they could play in the League...and then they capitulated in that and fell away. This was after making them qualify through the useless summer intertoto cup, then through the UEFA group stages, and into the knockouts.
This would be like Wolves playing the U23's at Bristol on Saturday, but much worse when Villa had a real chance of winning the UEFA Cup.
The fans were not happy because he was the one who sold them the dream, then discarded it as unimportant.
If you think about it, for most fans football is only about the dreams and hopes, rather than reality.

O'Neill had argued to be put in sole charge of the financial budget making him more powerful than the average manager. He blew the budget, and then complained that he needed more money, so Lerner said you need to complain to the budgetholder because he spent it all, and has hardly brought in a return on any sales, but has written off the value of purchases to zero. In effect, wasted money on short term signings with no plan.
Learn to trade better and buy players who will retain a value, or, put somebody else in charge of transfers so you don't run out of cash.

They advanced him more money from future years budget's on condition that he sell some players. Another **** season, another request for money...then he walked out on them right before the season started. Lerner was so disappointed he lost all interest but apparently he lost around $400 million of his own money by the time he could sell.
You can pretty much trace their decline back to that, they've been in disarray ever since....no succession planning, no trust, no squad style, no idea what kind of team they wanted..just a succession of managers all coming in, wanting money, applying sticking plasters, then moving on.

I’ll never understand that Moscow decision. He completely mugged off those fans who went all the way to Russia, to end up watching the reserves play in a UEFA cup quarter final.

His brand of football belongs in the past. I almost feel sorry for the Forest fans. The way Doherty was treated, when he was Ireland manager, was a disgrace.

I watched the game. Hard to impress, when you play as an attacking midfielder, in a team, who completely bypasses the midfield. All he did was chasing hopeless hoofed balls all half. Brentford not winning was completely undeserved. They played with flair and a plan, and was everything Forest is not. However they couldnt finish, and was thus punished for that.
I should of course give MON credit for making the solid defensively as it was obvious that the plan was to sit deep, take no initiative, then hope for a lucky chance or 2, which was eventually what happened, but even when sitting deep, they conceded lots of chances.
I was wondering throughout the half Bonatini was on the field, why on earth he'd agreed to go on loan to this lot, with MON in charge as the change of style couldnt be further from Nuno than this.

Probably double that, but it's over 4 years so average of £30m a year for top 6 football. I'd have taken that and I'm sure in hindsight Villa fans would now too.

Just for clarity, I'm not saying O'Neill was a brilliant manager, far from it in fact, to me he's just an Irish Keegan, jumping ship when the going gets tough. But he wasn't a **** manager by any means either, you don't finish top 6 three years in a row being a **** manager in my opinion.

I've just had a look properly and it turns out he spent £120m gross, but net it was £82m. So you're talking today's equivalent of £82m a year to take a team from 16th to 3 consecutive top 6 finishes. Not bad in my book.

I'm beginning to think he wanted a ticket out of Saudi, personally I don't blame him for exploiting an opportunity to get out of that neck of the woods.

I just remember how he changed the dynamic v Villa ( 2-0) there is a footballer in within.

Hope he gets back on track.

    I'm not having that!

I called out Zenga before anyone.
I called out Bonatini before anyone too.

It's all documented on here too so I'm not trying to claim something that I just thought or muttered down the pub when everyone was too ****ed to remember.

On both occasions I got dogs abuse for it.

They were both **** but people struggled to see the reality and got swept away with the hysteria of the moment.

I'm calling out Traore at the moment too and that's going down like a uranium turd.

    Time will tell.

    Give the guy a break.

If Ruddy is rusty then Bona is well seized up.....when did he last play a game before the Forest move??

A few peeps on here very well understood his limitations; knew he wouldn't be up to it at PL level. Just needs to get up to speed, is decent at Chump level utilised correctly in the right set-up....links up play real nicely even if he isn't prolific.

That’s still not really an apt direct comparison though is it?

The top 6 wasn’t a top 6 then, it was only a top 4-5. Everton were regularly 5-7th with less points than 6th will get this season.
The TV deals were only just starting to ramp up to the obscene levels they are now.

So really, where they finished in his reign, compared to his spend within operating budgets at the time, and level of consistent competition, were hardly great.

    You've missed the point.
    I'm a pragmatic realist.

Whilst people are blindly frapping themselves, getting carried away by things that I'm not convinced by I'll merely make statements about my observations.

I don't really have the power or authority to write people off, I do have a fair of perfectly serviceable eyes. So are you advocating that I ignore what I see and implementing blind faith?

This is elite sport not someone taking a driving test or putting up a shed. Have as much faith in those people as you like. I'll take stats and what I can see, feel, touch and smell over you closing your eyes tightly and wishing really hard for it to come true.

Pride is not the word I'd use - light-hearted smugness perhaps, especially in the face of all the grief I got. And especially as my pragmatic opinions seem to be proved correct against the tide of popular opinion, time and time again.

What can I say... I just don't think it will happen for Traore here. Which is a massive shame because I had high hopes for him and I was absolutely buzzing when we got him.

I'll be flabberghasted if he gets to 5 league goals this season and for a not insignificant transfer fee for a striker, that is poor. It's not even as though he creates for others either.
