Some nice words about us on five live.
I was there at Barnsley away (magically considering how hard it always has been to get away tickets) and his attitude really stunk at the time but I wouldnt class him in the same breath as Ohara or Kightly and anyone who doesnt get paid has the right to moan no matter what the salary is

There were a few on here too. How people could defend him after the Ipswich home game over the festive period completely baffled me. It was clear by that point that he had no idea what he was doing - and he also had no idea how to change things round.

People fell for his well spoken manner - but the things he said were never backed up with actions. I lost track of the amount of times he said "I'll be making changes for the next game" - only to play the exact same eleven in the next game, with the same clueless tactics.

Many blame Saunders for chatting **** and sending us down - but in reality, Solbakken started the job - and Saunders helped to finish it off.

The big difference is, Solbakken spent £13m on getting us to play ****, mind-numbing football with zero shots on goal in some games. Saunders spent zilch but at least managed to get us playing something that resembled football - even if it was aimless hoofball.

The only good thing that came about the Solbakken era was Sako. Every other signing was atrocious.

100%. I still have nightmares about those games now. I'm surprised I wasn't bored into a coma during the Ipswich at home game.

Foley was a strange one. Would give you nothing less than a solid 7/10 every week. All of a sudden couldn't string a pass and couldn't defend. It must have been a far more toxic dressing room then we can imagine.

    Exactly.

Peszky might have turned out OK if that Palace **** hadn't have crocked him for which he wasn't even yellowed and then he set up their second Zaha goal. After that it was downhill all the way.

    Hmmm...

Just knew this would inevitably boil down to the clueless nonsense on the situation of the 'identity change' Solbakken was charged to attempt. :)

They were supposed to pay back a £5m loan today. They haven’t , they are in serious trouble by the look of things. Perhaps Mcginlay will dig deep to help out Holdsworth ?

He was our first attempt at a foreign manager and too many fans backed him to the hilt and then couldnt back down and realise he was awful. Theres one thing playing possession football (like we do now) but its another when its all across the defensive line and in your own half. He looked the part and spoke well, but that was about it. Saunders took us down but Solbakken was taking us to exactly the same place. Those christmas games are easily as bad as anything Saunders delivered.

Only on this forum could we go from Karl Henry not getting paid, to Harold Wilson, Solbakken vs Saunders 5 years ago to a debate on socialism in the UK.

I only came on here to say that Henry hasn't been paid, and should be - but now that Bolton looks like they're in administration and so I doubt he is going to be paid now, which is a shame for a former player of ours who was instrumental in captaining our team during it's most successful period for 35 years. Some of the blame some put on him for our demise is bang out-of-order...

Never cease to amaze me some comments on here... I'll be skipping this thread in future I think!

If Bolton owe him then administration is neither here nor there. Clubs are obliged to pay all football creditors (players, staff, other clubs, the FA/PL/FL) when they exit admin, it's one of the conditions on handing over the Golden Share (essentially the right to play in the league) to the new owners. One of many reasons why HMRC hate dodgy football clubs because they're now well down the queue and end up missing out on what they're due.

It coincided with getting promoted to the Premier League. Also, I watched him carefully several times after promotion and he was a master at not making a mistake, simply by not doing anything at all. Like his confidence was gone and he had a fear of getting found out, so managed to avoid being anywhere near the ball at all times. Backing off continually without attempting a tackle was his forte. In some of the bad defeats, others would get slated for mistakes, but Foley would get his 7 rating probably because you couldn't remember him doing anything obviously wrong.

Memory could be wrong, but I think he may have been injured at the start of our first season back, maybe for most of that season. Either way, he never regained the excellent form of the promotion season and I think he lived off that for several seasons.

He didn’t follow him, he was invited over to cover for the loss of his first and second choice RB options.

Kudos to the great man for looking beyond the ****tiness he had to endure and having faith in people, perhaps hoping to reignite some professional integrity.

He wasn’t actually used much as it turned out. :)

After that Ipswich game Foley walked straight past Mick at the end and straight down the tunnel whilst Mick had his hand held out.

They must have patched it up at some point as he went on to play for him at Ipswich, but was a very noticeable snub at the time.

Anyone who thinks we went down to League One because of Solbakken or Saunders must have forgotten how that dressing room fell apart around September/October the year before. It went under Mick, and he could never get it back. Solbakken was just naive walking into a situation too big for him, and I don’t even blame Saunders really.

I’ll always remember the Bolton at home game in 2011/12. Johnson played a pass back to Hennessey, who completely butchered it and the Bolton striker nipped in to put the ball past him. It was completely and utterly Hennessey’s fault, but after about 10 seconds with the fans turning, he very deliberately walked up to Johnson and publically blamed him, and who did the crowd turn on... Johnson just looked flabbergasted like he couldn’t do anything right, getting blamed for Hennessey’s mistake.

This is the same Hennessey who put a transfer request in the morning after he was dropped for Ikeme in 2008 even though he’d been playing awful. The same Hennessey who refused to play for the club at Gillingham.

There were some very bad apples in that dressing room that let this club collapse at the expense of their egos, and yet the one who gets all the blame is still vilified even now, just for having the nerve to sign for Wolves and break up the cosy club.

At the end of the day there was a lot wrong with the club at that time, Solbakken and Saunders were both the wrong appointments, and to be honest I can't think of any circumstance where Saunders would be the right appointment, absolute chancer he was. That second relegation was my first year as a full season ticket holder, so I remember it pretty well, and it was just awful. You could kinda see what was happening, yet no one in the club seemed to, even up to the end Saunders was saying he thinks we'll stay up.

Tbf I know it will be a very unpopular opinion but I actually thought Roger Johnson was one of our more consistent players that year, not saying he was brilliant, but he was nowhere near as bad as others. It was noticeable how our defence went downhill once Gorkss came in, for example. And any chance we really had went when our three best players up to that point Sako, Ebanks-Blake and Ikeme, all had season-ending injuries within about two weeks of each other.

That second relegation was the best thing that could have happened. It helped us rid ourselves of the dross.

Hennessy is more of a target for my abuse than others ever were.

I shudder to think of the consequences of us avoiding relegation that year and Morgan keeping Saunders on with a 4 quid budget

I also feel sorry for our Terry. He was used as a patsy to paper over the cracks in order to save money. He was never capable of being a manager of a Prem team, particularly under those circumstances. He was an employee of the club who was asked to do a job and he needed to pay his bills and feed his family. Why should he refuse/walk? It's perfectly reasonable for him to have accepted the impossible task given how long he'd been with us and I think it's shameful that he received derision from certain quarters of the press and some of our fans.

Saunders had already arranged to sign Gorkss permanently in the event of survival. £25k a week.

Marlon King had also been his primary target in January (mercifully failed) so we could have looked forward to a serial woman beater up top for us.

The final 6-7 weeks of 2012/13 is the only time I've voluntarily withdrawn myself from attending games, I suspect I will never need to do that again. I have a very high tolerance for rubbish football, as evidenced by watching us for 30 years and counting. Saunders was a step too far though. An appalling specimen on so many levels.

Solbakken is an idiot. He walked into Wolves and tried to play football with the squad we had, it's likable to walking into First Aid at Work course and telling them to resort to the operating theatre.

Admittedly, Nuno spent more on one player but he quickly weeded out the players he couldn't work with like Edwards, Price and Dicko and kept the likes of Coady, Doc and worked on Bennett.

We've all said our biggest most important signing was Nuno, particularly for his planning, insight and everything else. Its only with this hindsight it removes any doubt just how clueless Stale was.

It was worth relegation to avoid Gorkss getting that ridiculous contract. Saunders was an absolute clown and his appointment lies fully on Morgan. I’m reliably informed Moxey couldn’t believe he’d got the job, Morgan went right over him.
