Wigan (a) 1988/89

Discussion in '1980's' started by The New Stand, Mar 24, 2013.

  1. Who remembers this one? It was a rearranged fixture which was shoe-horned in at the end of the season on a Tuesday night.

The starting line up was a bit odd. Bully and Mutch were away with the under-21s so our front two were Mick Gooding and either Robbie Dennison or Phil Chard. Either way, it was odd!

We'd already been confirmed as champions and the mood in the away end was carnival-like. We occupied a strange terrace behind the goal and also part of the terracing in front of the stand. There was a game of football taking place in the away end behind the goal on the grass bank which was ended by a miserable PC taking away the ball!

Main memory is driving around Wigan, asking the locals the way to the football ground and none of them seemed to know.

I was there - and remember seeing the players coming off the coach, and Gary Bellamy showing us his Third Division champions medal.

  5. Lovely sunny evening. Party atmosphere in the ground.
I remember being sat outside a pub just up the road. There was probably 10 people in it, you'd never of known there was a football about to take place. Mate drove us up & it took us 40 mins to get back to Stafford, I think we were home for last orders.
